From one fan to another

With all the stuff that’s been happening lately, I’m definitely lagging behind in the things I’d like to blog about, but I feel that it would be a sin to leave out one thing that’s happened lately that leaves us absolutely scratching our heads. A haunted house, helping friends with home improvement, Michelle losing her voice, a new geek-toy TV, progress on the flooded apartment and the fans and dehumidifiers, me breaking Michelle’s iBook, a new geek-toy cell phone, and other things aside, I can’t pass one experience up.

I’m talking of course about The Mystery Box.

Early last week, Michelle called me at work to tell me that she had received a mysterious package from Hong Kong, addressed to her, and had no clue what to make of it. Her first reaction was that someone may have mailed her a dead chicken infected with avian flu (my fears exactly, we get a lot of poultry). Nevertheless, she opened the package and was further confused by the contents.

When I got home, I checked it out. It was wrapped in white paper with a handwritten address but a stamped return address bearing the name Ms. Fan of such-and-such address in Hong Kong. Also on the outside was a customs declaration sticker describing the contents as a gift sign, approximately $13USD value.

I’ll leave the contents and unveiling to photos which I hope can do it justice:

What to make of it? It has to be from a friend of ours… right? I mean, the Apple logo? And why to Michelle and not to me, the ├╝ber-Mac fanatic? (though she’s fairly seduced by their wares as well). We’re just left scratching our heads. And who exactly is Ms. Fan?

One note — when we were opening the little bag that it came in, the air escaped with a WHOOSH and we were once again plunged into fear of avian flu. Should we have done anything differently? If she hadn’t already opened it, I almost feel like I would have taken it back to the Post Office and asked them to open it…

Truly, a mad, mad world. I’m definitely hanging this behind my desk at work.

This I know. We already figured this might have something to do with you and/or Gwen, but we still just don’t get it. Fill me in on the details, please. Who’s Ms. Fan? Where did it come from? Dear Lord why?!?
