As much disdain I have for professional sports, both because of salaries and because of the notion of “world championships” involving the US and Canada, it made me happy to see the Steelers win last night. I won’t be a fairweather fan and say I’ve been rooting for them, but the combination of Jerome Bettis likely retiring and winning in his hometown of Detroit as a sendoff, Bill Cowher having the longest tenure of any NFL coach (14 years) and finally seeing a win, and the fact that exactly 10 years ago, I was super-hyped for the Steelers to beat the Cowboys (which they didn’t) all combine to make me happy that they pulled it off.
Growing up in the 70’s and early 80’s outside of Pittsburgh, it’s like those colors are etched in my mind — all the hats and snowsuits and lunchboxes in black and gold. I always like it when the Steelers do well.
It was a great game, too — lots of fun to watch. Thanks to Joshua for the party.
Quick thoughts on the new iPhoto in iLife ‘06. Nothing of Ars Technica calibre, but I felt it was cool enough to warrant a write-up. Michelle and I popped in the Apple Store yesterday while doing registry shopping and — what do you know — I forgot that I had wanted to buy the new iLife. So here we are.
iMovie, iDVD, GarageBand — all cool updates. GB especially has a pretty slick podcasting setup, including integration with iChat for audio interviews. iWeb is nice, but, well, I kind of know how to publish for the web and stuff. Michelle seems interested, though, and is keeping it around her dock for a while.
The main thing that got me wanting to write a review for iPhoto was that I spent like four hours yesterday (longer than I ever do with this stuff) and completely updated my digital photo collection. Yeah, this sounds geeky, but I have nearly 4,000 photos spread over nearly ten years. I use my photos for the the wedding blog, working on other wedding stuff, sending to friends, archiving both desktop and World of Warcraft screenshots, as well as the usual practice of keeping them for posterity. Since we’re obviously moving towards more digitization, not less, I’ll wager that 4,000 will pale in comparison with the amount I’ll have in a few years — which is why the new iPhoto purports to support up to 250,000 photos in this version.
And it’s pretty snappy — like, really snappy. I can whip through my thousands of photos really quickly, like they are laid on a large tabletop in front of me (and my arms are really long). A little popup displaying the month and year as they fly by is a big help when looking at a big view of photos. Thumbnails scale really quickly with the zoom slider, too.
The coolest new part about iPhoto, though, is the full screen viewing and editing. We’ve had full screen slideshows with auto or manual navigation for a while, but not just going all out with a single photo and working on it. I think that’s the biggest factor towards me redoing things — bright, vivid, full screen versions of photos as I was reviewing them, widescreen on my PowerBook.
Another new feature is full screen comparing of anywhere from two to eight photos next to each other. It came in very handy for when I had imported duplicates, or had a couple quick shots in succession that I wanted to pare down to just the best. The fact is, I started with over 4,000 pics and ended up with a couple hundred less when all was said and done.
The last thing I used heavily wasn’t really changed in the new version, but I ended up using it a lot from the momentum of the other cool stuff. I ended up tagging all of my photos with one or more keywords in the app, ranging from the place they occurred, to if they had me or Michelle in them, to if they were about pets, to if they were taken during a holiday. The end result is that in a few seconds, I can pretty much locate any photo. Whether it’s by date, keyword, or photo title, I can pull it up. Need all the photos I have of pets during holidays? Thirty-three photos. How about all the pictures of family while traveling? Only eight of those. Or maybe just pics of the family? There are 406 of those. It actually only took a couple hours of concerted effort to really make a dent in the organization of this stuff.
All told, this is a great update. It’s super stable, fast, and it got me motivated to really clean up my digital photo setup. I’ve got a great system for going forward and I can pull up all the photos I need really quickly. Good job, Apple.
Well, Macy just had another seizure. This one tossed her from her cat tower perch across the lid of the trash can, knocking it off, then getting caught on a basket on the windowsill where I keep my wallet and keys, dumping that, then onto her food/water tray, flipping the water bowl and landing in the now water-filled (and wallet-filled) tray, where she seized for less than a minute on her side, in the water. Other than the dramatics, it was just like the other two (in January and March of last year).
She was on Phenobarbital for six months, from March until September, when the new DC vet recommended we try keeping her off of it (since it is toxic, after all). She’s been fine since then, until today.
Gotta figure this out… is it epilepsy or some household allergy or a tumor or ???
Update: I actually had forgotten: since there’s not a lot that you can do during a seizure once you clear the path to keep her safe, and because I had my phone in my shirt pocket, I snapped a picture during the seizure for future reference. It’s not graphic or anything, but obviously you may want to use discretion when viewing. Pic here. Now, not 10 minutes later, you can find a normal pic here.
Between bouts of late-night work, wedding planning, and sickness, I haven’t had time for much fun stuff lately. But I started helping Lanya with her new site tonight and we added some Flickr photos. I figured it was time to do the same on my site, so now I’ve got my moblogs in the sidebar. I also added a tag for wedding-related stuff and added those photos to the wedding blog.
I was glad to be able to use some of my new-found CSS ability (thanks to this book). Though I can’t do much, I at least am avoiding tables and learning how to do things the right way. And it’s fun!

Thanks to Silbo for the heads up on this earlier this week — I passed it by, yawning at another “Microsoft story”. Seems QuickTime can now handle WMV files via this great plugin.
More about it on decaffeinated as well.
Update: Forgot to mention, the cool part about this is that it’s now free. Was only $10, but it’s nice to see compatibility things like this become free.
Well, it comes time again for me to make a prediction as to Apple’s new product releases at MacWorld in thirty minutes. I have no real sources or anything, other than all of the rumor sites, but I’d like to take a stab anyway, combining the rumors with my judgement as to what’s feasible or not and see where that leaves me later today.
Likely, IMHO:
• slightly larger Mac mini with 3.5″ desktop drive
• iPod shuffle with some sort of display
• Bluetooth Mighty Mouse (will buy this)
• iLife ‘06, now with a more sleek iPhoto and iWeb, for WYSIWYG web publishing
• thin Intel-based iBook, possibly renamed
• Numbers, a spreadsheet app to go with Keynote and Pages, possibly with Quicken-like features
• Bluetooth remote with Front Row available on all Macs
• video downloads waiting on your .Mac account, including possibly feature-length movies
Wishful thinking:
• Tivo-like service, integrated with Mac mini
• Intel-based PowerBook, possibly renamed, possibly with built-in iSight
Also there will be something out of left field, like a completely surprise application the way Safari was. Perhaps iWeb was meant to be this, but it got leaked on the Apple Store site.
Let’s see how I do. Tune in here.
Today we return to the house with a new hardwood floor in the bedroom, replacing the warped laminate one. Hopefully that chapter in our lives is over.
After a long holiday weekend in Connecticut, including meeting with and choosing our officiant for the wedding (a reverend whom we’re really excited about), and actual New Years in the Berkshires, we spent yesterday in a combination of anxiety attacks (Michelle, medicating and preparing for our blizzard-ful flight takeoff), me having to call into a work conference call for our State of the Company while this was happening, and flight delay and de-icing. Also, when they peeled up the old floor, they were set back a day because it was still wet underneath and it had to dry. We got home from the airport, picking up Thai on the way, swapped the dirty clothes for clean ones, and promptly spent the night at Emily’s.
Today found me going to work at our new office downtown for the first time, where I setup the printing and resolved various other wireless issues, then picked up Macy and walked a mile carrying her cat carrier and my work backpack after dark. Turns out Connecticut Ave. was closed between Farragut (work) and Dupont (halfway home on the bus) so I had to Metro and catch a cab in order to pick her up in time. Also the vet bill was more than our airplane tickets.
Tonight we wait until 9pm for the floor glue to dry so we can move the stacked half of our possessions back into the bedroom and spend a night at home. At last.
Hate to sound run-on, but I’m ready for a break again, already.
Update: I forget to mention that two contributing factors on Macy’s vet bill were “fecal floatation” and “anal expression”. Can someone enlighten me? More than anything, I’m just curious as to whether anyone else has had them done.
Update 2: Ok, I just had to Google, and I’ve learned all I need to know about butt scooting in dogs and what makes poo stinky in cats. I am now enlightened.
A good article over at O’Reilly’s Mac Dev Center on Bluetooth:
What Is Bluetooth (apparently not a question, though)
Talks about what you might use Bluetooth for and how to get it rolling on Mac, Windows, and Linux.
Sadly, this passes for a blog post by me these days. Maybe this picture of Macy will help improve it.
Sometimes you need a good chuckle in the morning. Mazzi sent me these two pics today and both made me laugh out loud, the first because just this morning I got messaged by those stupid AIM bots, and the second because it reminded me of a picture (which I can’t seem to find right now) of some kids with a raccoon in a Rubbermaid tote that escaped and then freaked when it saw itself in the rearview mirror (c’mon, wouldn’t you laugh?)
Today is obviously a slow news day.
